Dear Undergraduate Students,

I write with important updates about Fall 2020.

As President Ryan wrote you previously in his message detailing the return to Grounds plans, classes will begin on Tuesday, August 25, 2020. The last day of regularly scheduled classes will be Tuesday, November 24, 2020. The updated academic calendar for Fall 2020 is available.

Final exams will be held on-line from Wednesday, December 2, 2020, through Friday, December 11, 2020. The updated exam schedule is available.

How and when will I know how my classes are being delivered?

We are collecting this information from schools now. We will publish updated information for each of your classes in SIS by August 1, 2020, and send you another email when we do. You’ll be able to see the updated instruction mode for each of your classes and search for additional classes based on the instruction mode. See the instruction modes used at UVA.

The capacity of our classrooms has been greatly reduced to ensure safe social distancing. These reduced capacities will not affect class enrollment, but they will affect where classes can be delivered and how many classes will meet in-person each week. As a result, classes that meet in-person this fall will require new room assignments. Starting immediately, you will begin to see changes in SIS as we remove all the previously assigned classrooms and begin making new reservations for some classes.

When am I required to tell UVA that I am returning to Grounds or studying remotely for Fall 2020?

Beginning the first week of August, you will see a new to-do item in your SIS dashboard. It will ask you to tell us if you plan to return to Grounds this fall or if you will be taking classes from a remote location. If you indicated previously that you plan to live in UVA housing in 2020–21 or you already informed your school that you do or do not intend to study on Grounds this fall, you will still need to complete the new to-do item in SIS. We will send you more information about this to-do item when it becomes available in SIS.

We know this has been a challenging year for you and your families. We hope you are safe and well. Those of us in the Office of the University Registrar are here if you need us. You may reach me at [email protected] if you have questions or concerns.

Kind regards,

Laura F. Hawthorne
