Dear Fall 2020 Instructors:

You are receiving this email because you are listed as the Primary Instructor for one or more classes this fall. Please share this information with others (Secondary Instructors, Graduate Teaching Assistants, etc.) who will be teaching with you.

Classes will begin on Tuesday, August 25, 2020. The last day of regularly scheduled classes will be Tuesday, November 24, 2020. The updated academic calendar for Fall 2020 is available.

Final exams will be held on-line from Wednesday, December 2, 2020, through Friday, December 11, 2020. The updated exam schedule is available.

Some graduate programs will continue instruction on-line after the Thanksgiving recess with a shortened exam period. Please consult with your school for further details.

If you are teaching exclusively in a program that was fully on-line prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, you may disregard the rest of this message.

How will I know which of my students are attending classes remotely in Fall 2020?

We are developing a tool in SIS that will require students to tell us whether or not they plan to return to Grounds for Fall 2020. We are working with the ITS teams to ensure we can share this information with you easily, most likely through your course website in UVA Collab or Canvas. Please keep in mind this data will be a starting point for you as you plan your class; it will not guarantee that every student who is returning to Grounds will attend your class in person.

How will students know how I am delivering my class(es) in Fall 2020?

We are collecting this information from schools now. If you wish to confirm or change your instruction mode, please contact your dean’s office. We will publish updated information for each of your classes in SIS by August 1, 2020. See the instruction modes used at UVA.

The capacity of our classrooms has been greatly reduced to ensure safe social distancing. These reduced capacities will not affect class enrollment, but they will affect where classes can be delivered and how many will meet in-person each week. As a result, classes that meet in-person this fall will require new room assignments. Starting immediately, you will begin to see changes in SIS as we remove all the previously assigned classrooms and begin making new reservations for some classes. We hope to have all in-person classes assigned to new rooms by mid-August.

I recognize this has been an extremely challenging year for you and your students. I hope you are safe and well. If there is anything we in the Office of the University Registrar can do to help support your efforts to prepare for fall classes, please let us know. You may reach me at [email protected].

Kind regards,

Laura F. Hawthorne
